Schematic of gravity and pumped system

This is not intended to accurately represent scale or true designIn this example an above ground tank is fed from the main roof via existing gutters through a filter designed to flush away debris and leaves during periods of heavy rain. From the tank it flows by gravity to a pump which delivers it to another tank in the attic, this pump has a pressure switch and only comes on when the ballcock lowers. From this tank in the attic water descends under gravity pressure to feed the washing machine and toilets.

The tank in this instance could just as easily be underground in which case a submersible pump would be installed within the tank
